Why was Slaughter and May the right choice
for you?
As lawyers at Slaughter and May, we don’t
specialise too early. As someone coming from
a non-law background and having done a
multi-disciplinary degree, I found this
appealing.
How has your degree prepared you for your
role?
In the same way that any analytical degree
that encourages those who study it to
question, be thorough and form their own
reasonable, logical and consistent views
would prepare someone to work in an
intellectually demanding environment.
How has your role differed from your
expectations?
The training is as thorough as you would
expect but I have been given some fantastic
opportunities whilst at Slaughters, so in that
sense my expectations have been exceeded.
I was lucky enough to spend 6 months on
secondment in Paris. My French improved
massively, I got the opportunity to work in a
completely different office culture and I was
able to live and socialise in one of the world’s
most beautiful cities; all opportunities I
would not otherwise have access to.
What have you learnt from your training?
Training at Slaughter and May has taught me
to be thorough in everything I do, which is an
invaluable skill. It has also provided such a
broad and extensive grounding in all areas
that I feel confident in taking my next step
into qualification.
Which aspects of your role do you enjoy the
most?
It can be the most hectic, stressful times
which, with hindsight, are the most rewarding.
This is especially true when a team effort
involving several groups and sometimes
even foreign counsel results in a successful
outcome.
What do you feel you have achieved?
I have developed in terms of my organisational
skills, my analytical approach and my
all-round abilities as a lawyer. I’ve also had
some great laughs and rewarding experiences
so I would say that overall it has been two
years well spent!
